The entrance to a garden sets the tone for the entire space, yet so often, these areas are overlooked. This is exactly the case in my current project where my clients, like so many people, use the side entrance rather than the main one to enter their property. The space has been neglected, functioning more as a behind-the-scenes area than a welcoming entrance. As the house is also a holiday let, creating an inviting entrance is even more essential.
I’ve designed a lush, welcoming space that transforms this forgotten area, but I really wanted a focal point to draw the eye, anchor the design, and give the arrival some gravitas. I needed something with character and timeless appeal that would feel perfectly at home within the garden’s enduring structure.
Sourcing unique elements for gardens is such rewarding aspects of my work, I love it! There’s something so satisfying about discovering the right piece, something with history, beauty, and a sense of place which really fits, or even exceeds, the brief. With this in mind, I set off on a day of exploring the forever fascinating salvage yards in search of just the right piece to complete this design and realise the vision.
I was drawn to tall antique planters, weathered stone sundials, and aged statuary, but when I came across a beautifully patinated Armillary sphere on a weathered stone plinth, I knew it was special. Armillary spheres have a rich history, created in ancient times as astronomical instruments to map the stars and planets. Given this garden’s stunning hillside setting, where the small entrance opens up to reveal breathtaking views, the sphere symbolising our connection to the universe felt profoundly fitting.
When I presented the options to my clients, they immediately chose the Armillary sphere. There’s something incredibly rewarding about that moment when a client connects with a piece in the same way I do, affirming that we’ve found exactly the right element for their space.
This Armillary sphere, positioned at the entrance, will set the tone for the entire garden, offering a sense of arrival, intrigue and discovery. Its aged stone plinth will blend seamlessly with the existing terraced walls, giving the impression that it has always been there. The surrounding planting will soften and enhance it, creating a focal point that feels both intentional and effortless.
This is why I love designing gardens. It’s not just about plants and paving; it’s about creating meaningful spaces that resonate with people and their surroundings. The right focal point can transform an overlooked area into a place of beauty, setting the stage for all that follows.
I can’t wait to see this area transformed. Make sure you follow me on instagram to see how this and other meaningful space come to life.
(Yes, you’re right, that isn’t an Armillary sphere in the picture! You’ll have to wait to see it in situ very soon. This was one of the also-ran finds, a gorgeous sundial with the reflective phrase ‘time flies’ embossed in the dial. Turquoise verdigris against the zing of rusty orange and the texture of the stone plinth is just beautiful).
